Gem Illuminator

As light, travel through an imposing
crystal scenery. Navigate the world's illumination
and experience gem coloration at first hand.

Game Story

Imagine light emitted by the sun on its way to earth. You travelled 92 million miles undisturbed. Now you reached the earth's atmosphere. Eventually you are already close to the surface. You enter a home through a bedroom window. A little girl is playing with her granny's jewel case - she drops it! This is the most exciting moment of your life. This is your chance to do everything you are supposed to do. This is where you can show off your abilities. You are about to illuminate a gem scenery to thrill the girl's little heart.

Meta Game Story

This game was developed within the scope of the game programming seminar 2014/15 of the Computer Graphics Systems Group at Hasso Plattner Institute. Our team was technically mentored by Daniel Limberger. During the game idea evolution we cooperated with Martin Reiter. We aimed for a racing game with sudden changes of perspective. Martin guided us to the idea of telling a light ray's story which evolved into telling the story of light coloring a gem scenery.

Controlling

As the player, you are able to control the closest gem that could collide with the current light ray. If you use a mouse, hold the left mouse button and move your mouse to rotate the automatically chosen gem. If you choose to play Gem Illuminator on tablet or smart phone, trust your instinct and move the tablet. Depending on your mobile device sensors you will want to set the control sensivity in the options menu. Use the preview window to get the hang on the right rotation. You want to collide with as many gems as possible to color the scene and prolong your play in order to beat the highscore.

Technology Used

The seminar's setting required us to develop for mobile devices by using QML and OpenGL ES 2.0. We were provided with an NVidia Shield Tablet. Furthermore, we tested our game on the following devices: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, HTC Desire 500, Samsung Galaxy S4.
